Obstacle Limitation Surfaces

Marlborough Airport has obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS), which are defined surfaces in the airspace above and adjacent to the aerodrome. These surfaces are necessary to enable aircraft to maintain a satisfactory levels of safety while manoeuvring at low altitude in and out of the airport. These zones are known as approach and departure fans on every runway as well as zones for transitional side clearance. The airport uses a survey team from time to time to ensure these surfaces are free of obstacles therefore have not been subject to intrusions by tree growth or man-made obstacles. The Marlborough District Council establishes these zones in its District Plan and therefore, through the Resource Consent process, prohibit and the erection of buildings, masts and cranes that would otherwise intrude in these zones.

Please contact the Airport Authority in the first instance if you need to better understand the proximity of these zones.

New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (NZCAA) Rule Part 77 prescribes the rules for persons proposing to construct or alter structures that could intrude on the OLS zones and therefore pose a hazard to navigable airspace using their form CAA24077/01. A notice period of 90 days of any proposed construction is required by the NZCAA.
