Runway Reseal

In 2025, Marlborough Airport is embarking on its largest maintenance project to date, a re-paving of the runway and additional airside surfaces used by the airport. Aviation safety is the top priority for an airport's runway, where aircraft perform take-offs and landings. Our investment in maintaining and improving this infrastructure is important to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel.
Our runway reseal happens about every 15 years, so this is an opportunity to make additional improvements and investments to our existing airport infrastructure, such as re-paving the taxiway and airport apron, preparing for airlines' next generation of aircraft, better access for emergency vehicles, and a more welcoming carpark. This investment in infrastructure is funded through airport operations, with most of the air-side construction at night to minimise disruption to scheduled flights and the public.
Runways are the highest risk area of any airport, with safety a top priority for aircraft and travellers visiting our airport. In 2024, a closed tender process was carried out and contractors were invited to bid on this project. This process was highly competitive across costs, safety and risk management and previous airport experience. A closed tender process was chosen due to the specialist nature and high risks involved with the project.

Site Safety Officer
During the nightly runway resurfacing, the airfield will be closed to all aviation activities. This will begin when the air traffic controller goes off-watch. Organisations that provide hospital flight services have been advised. Marlborough Airport’s Operations and Safety Manager Steve Holtum is the Aviation Site Safety Officer during the nightly works if there are any aviation-related enquiries or safety concerns. Steve can be reached at steve.holtum@marlboroughairport.co.nz.
